Even the Best Guitarists in the World Struggle With Fretboard Visualization
At NAMM 2024, Tom Quayle (one of guitar education's most respected voices) asked ten elite players, including Matteo Mancuso, Josh Smith, Josh Meader, Seth Rosenbloom, and Andy Wood, what they personally still find hard about visualizing the fretboard. The most common struggles, ranked
Watching all ten answers back to back, the same handful of problems keep resurfacing. Here they are, ranked by how often they came up.
1. The guitar isn't laid out like a piano, and that's the whole problem
This was the most repeated idea in the video, in different words from different players. On a piano, a note lives in exactly one place. On guitar, the same note (and the same interval) can sit in five or six different spots on the neck. Josh Meader put it plainly: the guitar is "not like a piano," and the redundancy of "having multiple options for the same note" genuinely unsettled him early on. A guitarist coming from classical training made the same point from the opposite direction, saying the linearity of a piano and of written music made intuitive sense in a way the guitar's layout simply doesn't.
This is the root cause almost everything else on this list traces back to. If a note only existed in one place, none of the following problems would exist.
2. The B-string bump breaks every shape you've learned
Standard tuning has a major third between the G and B strings, while every other pair of adjacent strings is a perfect fourth apart. That one exception means a shape that works cleanly across the low strings shifts by one fret the moment it crosses onto the B string. More than one player named this as their single biggest recurring source of mistakes, describing it as a "weird transposition" baked into the instrument that doesn't exist on a violin, a piano, or a mandolin. It's not something you can practice away, either. You either build it into how you see shapes, or it keeps ambushing you.

3. Getting stuck in boxes instead of understanding the notes inside them
Both Josh Meader and Josh Smith described the same on-ramp: learning pentatonic scale shapes as five disconnected boxes, which works fine for soloing in one key but falls apart the moment real navigation is required. Josh Smith was candid about it: even after developing serious technique, being asked to play something as specific as an A-flat major 7 arpeggio meant stopping to consciously work out which A-flat 7 he meant, rather than seeing it instantly. He still describes it as something that occasionally trips him up today.
This is the exact failure mode breaking out of the pentatonic box is written to fix, and it's reassuring to hear a working professional describe the same box-shaped ceiling.
4. Connecting a chord to its arpeggio, and recognizing it everywhere on the neck
Josh Smith named this as his most persistent challenge: seeing the relationship between a chord and the arpeggio built from it, and recognizing that same chord (as a triad, then as a 7th chord) in every position up and down the neck, not just the one spot he first learned it in. Chords, he said, are harder for him to move around the fretboard than single-note lines, simply because he's spent far more hours soloing than voicing chords in multiple places.
5. Losing the shape once the chords start changing
One player described leaning on large pentatonic and scale shapes early on, which worked until songs demanded he actually outline the chord changes underneath, landing on the right third of each chord rather than just running a scale over the top. That forced a rebuild: smaller, more targeted shapes layered with root notes and specific intervals, so he could aim at particular notes instead of a whole scale-shaped area. He was upfront that it's still a work in progress, not a solved problem.

6. CAGED taught as five shapes, with no interval logic underneath
A few players brought up CAGED specifically, and the pattern was consistent: CAGED itself wasn't the problem, being taught it as five shapes to memorize with nothing connecting them was. One player said he dismissed CAGED early because of how it was presented, then later realized he'd been unconsciously combining it with an interval-based view all along, and that combination (not CAGED alone) was what actually worked.

7. Knowing which notes are chord tones, not just which notes are "in the scale"
A guitarist who started on classical guitar and moved into jazz described a distinct jump in difficulty: classical playing mostly required memorizing where fixed notes lived, but jazz required knowing, in real time, which notes in a scale were chord tones versus extensions. Knowing a scale and knowing what to do with it turned out to be two different skills.
8. Switching between differently-tuned instruments scrambles the map
Andy Wood's answer was the outlier, and it's worth including because it's such a clean illustration of how much the layout itself (not raw skill) drives this problem. His first instrument was mandolin, tuned in fifths like a violin. Guitar is tuned in fourths (with that one B-string exception). When he moves between writing on mandolin and transferring it to guitar, the note-redundancy problem compounds: the same pitch exists in multiple spots on both instruments, in different relative positions, and "the wires get crossed." Parts that lay out beautifully on mandolin turn into what he called a nightmare to translate to guitar.
What actually worked for them
Strip out the details and the fixes people described converge on the same idea: stop memorizing shapes tied to a fixed fret, and start anchoring everything to intervals relative to a root note. Josh Meader described discovering an interval-based method as the "massive, massive game changer" that let him see every option for a note centered on one root, rather than treating each shape as a separate, unrelated pattern. His summary of what that unlocked is worth repeating directly: once it clicked, "nothing's a mystery," which is exactly what you want on the guitar.
The other recurring fix was thinking in terms of the key, not the scale. One player said he doesn't visualize an A minor 7 chord in isolation, he visualizes it as part of the surrounding key (C major, D minor, E minor, and so on), which turns the neck into seven overlapping reference points instead of one shape floating on its own.
The takeaway
None of this is a shortcut. Every player in the video, without exception, described visualization as something they built through deliberate, often frustrating repetition, not something they were handed. The specific sticking points (redundant notes, the B-string shift, boxes without context, chords versus arpeggios) are structural features of the instrument, and they show up whether you've been playing six months or twenty years at a professional level.
