Say the Note Name: Fretboard Practice, Hands-Free

The short answer: Say the Note Name shows you a note on the fretboard and you name it out loud — your device's microphone listens for the answer. Points are based on speed. It is fretboard recognition with your voice, which turns out to be a surprisingly strong way to lock the neck in.

What the game is

A note lights up; you say its name. Speaking the answer engages a different loop than tapping — you have to fully commit to a name, out loud, with no options to lean on. That little bit of extra commitment is what makes it stick.

What it teaches

  • True recall — verbalizing forces a real answer, not a tap-and-guess.
  • Hands-free reps you can do with the guitar in playing position.
  • The same note map as the other note games, reinforced through speech.

Why it's cool

Saying it out loud pulls in your ear and your mouth, not just your eyes, so the memory lands deeper. And because your hands are free, you can practice with the guitar actually in your lap — the closest thing to naming notes as you play.

Where to start

Start with guitar fretboard notes explained, then pair this with Find the Notes for the tapping version of the same skill.
